One hundred and fourteen rooms across six categories, from a quiet courtyard Classic to a two-bedroom penthouse on the fifth floor. Every category above Classic looks over Lake Wakatipu or the Remarkables.
The hotel is a shallow L along Lake Esplanade, which means most rooms get the lake rather than the car park. Where a room faces the courtyard instead, the rate reflects it honestly.
Interiors are quiet: oiled oak, wool, schist detailing and a colour palette taken from the tussock hills behind the town. Beds are New Zealand-made with 400-thread cotton and a choice of pillow. Every room has blackout curtains that genuinely black out, double glazing, an espresso machine, a mini bar stocked with Otago produce, a safe that fits a laptop, and Wi-Fi we pay properly for.
Housekeeping is daily, turndown on request. Cots and rollaway beds are free of charge; connecting rooms are available in the Superior and Executive categories for families.
Rates shown are the lowest available for two guests per night, including GST and Wi-Fi. Breakfast at the Harbourmaster is NZ$38 per person, or included in most packages.
Our entry category, on the first and second floors facing the sheltered courtyard garden. Compact but properly proportioned: a walk-in rain shower, a real desk, an armchair by the window and a wardrobe that takes a week of clothes. The quietest rooms in the hotel, well away from the esplanade.
West-facing on floors two to four, with a full-width window over Lake Wakatipu and a reading chair placed to use it. The bathroom has a double vanity and a separate bath. The best-value room in the hotel for a first visit to Queenstown, and the one guests ask for again.
Corner rooms with a private balcony wide enough for two chairs and a table, a separate seating area with a sofa bed, and a desk that suits a working week. Nespresso, a Marshall speaker and a mini bar with Gibbston Valley wine. Connecting pairs are available for families.
A proper suite: separate lounge with a dining table for four, bedroom behind a sliding oak screen, and a freestanding bath set at the window with the Remarkables across the water. South-east aspect, which means the morning light is extraordinary and the sunsets are reflected rather than direct.
Two aspects on the fourth floor, a wraparound terrace above the esplanade, a dining table for six and a kitchenette with a wine fridge. Suited to a celebration or a longer stay. Includes daily breakfast for two, an airport transfer on arrival and priority restaurant seating.
The whole western end of the fifth floor: two bedrooms with en-suites, a full kitchen, a lounge with a fireplace, a dining table for eight and 180 degrees of lake and mountain from a private terrace. Lift access is by key card only. Comes with a dedicated host, daily breakfast and transfers throughout your stay.
Bathrooms in every category above Classic have a bath as well as a shower, heated floors and heated mirrors, and Bramley products refilled rather than replaced. Water is soft and comes from the same catchment as the lake.
Flexible rates may be cancelled without charge up to 48 hours before arrival; inside 48 hours one night is charged. Advance-purchase and package rates are prepaid and non-refundable, but dates can be moved once, subject to availability, if you tell us at least seven days ahead.
Peak dates — Christmas, New Year and the Queenstown Winter Festival — carry a minimum stay and a longer cancellation window, confirmed at the time of booking.
